Provence Lavender & Camargue White Horses

Tour Leader: Serge Krouglikoff

So many people across the globe fulfil their life-long dream with us to photograph the Wild White Horses of the Camargue.

You can’t beat the adrenalin rush of this noble breed splashing through the shallow waters of the marsh and lakes in their natural habitat.

We have combined this workshop with another dream of many – swathes of Lavender fields, like purple velvet, sweeping through the valleys of Provence – it’s a once-a-year experience not to be missed. Understandably, so many famous artists came to this region to paint endless canvasses of the vibrant colours with such extraordinary light.

Capture iconic, award-winning photos with Serge on home soil.

Day 1.

Meet at Marseille airport around 12h00 noon. You will be collected from the airport for transfer to your charming hotel in the heart of Provence. Take time to unwind & unpack.

After a welcome/briefing meeting late afternoon, we set off for a group dinner and the first shoot, both within and outside the picturesque village.

Day 2.

Before sunrise, we set off to photograph the Lavender fields in the pale morning light. We will capture different views of the lavender, dotted with small stone shepherd’s huts (Mazet) with the mountains as a backdrop.

In the afternoon, we return to capture the beautiful blue lavender and sunflowers – a sight and scent to behold! We end the day when the sun sets over the lavender fields.

Day 3.

We set off again today for the lavender and sunflower fields, but we head for different locations today, giving you the opportunity of photographing diverse landscapes with varying backdrops, providing a wide array of stunning landscape images at sunrise and sunset.

Day 4.

At dawn, we head for the wild and beautiful canyon and lake, described as one of the most picturesque sites in the South of France. Weather conditions permitting, we will capture some nice swirly mist over the water at the sun rises.

In the afternoon we have our last lavender shoot before heading to the Camargue in the morning.

Day 5.

A relaxed morning to pack and enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before checking out and departing for the Camargue late morning. We stop on the way at the ‘Occitane en Provence’ factory for a visit and some shopping!

Check in to the hotel and take time to unwind, unpack and visit the beautiful mediaeval village. Make the most of the evening to capture some typical clichés, within the old city walls, and a lovely view of the ramparts at sunset.

Day 6.

Today we visit the Rencontres d’Arles (International photography festival) which is the biggest of its kind in the world – some say it is to photography what Cannes is to cinema! Launched in the early 70s, this is the highlight of the photography year and you can visit numerous quality exhibitions by famous photographers. A very special day, not to be missed, for professionals and amateurs alike.

Day 7.

At dawn, we photograph the iconic Wild White Horses running through the marsh and heading straight towards your cameras. We shoot several drives with the horses running towards and across your field of view. We will also take shots of the ‘Gardians’ (Camargue Cowboys) dressed in their traditional Camargue shirts & hats, trident in hand, surrounded by the herd as well as close-up portraits of both the horses and the ‘weathered’ ranchers.

Late afternoon, we have another session with the white horses running through the marsh, until sunset. We will also capture the ‘Gardians’ at work herding the wild horses.

Day 8.

In the morning, we head to the beach for a shoot with a beautiful white Camargue stallion. We photograph him rearing on the top of the sand dunes and running along the golden sand of the beach, making for striking action shots and beautiful portraits.
White horses on the beach
Late afternoon, we capture the dream scene of the Wild White horses running through the surf, along the beach, with sea spray flying. We will also photograph them at a peaceful lagoon, with beautiful reflections.

Day 9.

In the morning, we photograph the sparring stallions – this is a unique opportunity to see the White Horses entwined at full height, in feisty temperament with their manes flying.
Return to the hotel for breakfast and check out, before departures to Montpellier airport (flights from early afternoon).

Create Away is the only photography workshop company actually based in the Camargue, making us the number one specialist for photographing the horses.
