Camargue Weekender

By popular demand, we have created a mini Camargue weekend workshop, to ensure people with busy lives don’t miss out!

Photographing the Wild White Horses of the Camargue is on most Wildlife and Equine photographer’s bucket list. You can’t beat the adrenalin rush of this noble breed running through the marsh and heading straight towards your camera, providing iconic images. We will also spend a half day photographing the Famous Pink Flamingos and Camargue birdlife, accompanied by our BBC Wildlife specialist bird photographer, who has access to the nature reserve before it opens to the public, allowing you exclusive viewing and photography. The winter is mating season for the Flamingos so it’s a great time of year to capture their elaborate mating dance and new plumage! And finally, we will spend a morning photographing a beautiful white Camargue stallion in action on the beach and rearing on the sand dunes.

This workshop has been designed as a stand-alone photo tour, but it can also be ‘bolted-on’ to our Friesian Dream workshop in Northern Spain, which is complementary in duration and content.

Day 1.

Arrive at Montpellier airport by mid-afternoon for transfer to your charming hotel in the centre of the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes.

At 6pm, we will gather for a welcome drink and briefing meeting.

Day2.

We spend the morning at the Parc Ornithologique, which is a nature reserve of great importance. Accompanied by a BBC Wildlife bird specialist photographer and expert in his field, we will have pre-dawn access, long before it is opened to the public, enabling you to photograph the birds exclusively in the early morning light. You will be guided to the prime locations among the waterways and lakes to capture a wide variety of species, from single birds perched at the nest to large flocks of pink Flamingos.

In the afternoon, we photograph the Camargue wild white horses running through the marsh and woods. We shoot several drives with the horses running across and towards your field of view. We will also take portraits of the ‘Gardians’ (Camargue Cowboys) dressed in their traditional Camargue attire, trident in hand, surrounded by the herd.

Day 3.

We head to the beach for the final shoot of a beautiful white Camargue stallion. We photograph him running in and around the sea and surf, as well as rearing on the top of the sand dunes. We also take close-up portraits, in-between the action shots.

*To join our workshops, you need to have a good understanding of how your own camera works (how to set it up in Manual, Aperture and Shutter priority) and understand about exposure.

Pre-workshop course (subject to availability)
Cost including hotel £370 pp.
If you would like to arrive a day early to benefit from a course on your camera, settings, techniques and how to obtain the best out of your workshop, please let us know. We consider the pre-course very worthwhile for intermediate-level photographers and essential for beginners or photographers with new equipment they are not familiar with.
