Equine Photographer’s Dream

Photographing the Wild White Horses of the Camargue is on most Wildlife and Equine photographer’s bucket list.

You can’t beat the adrenalin rush of this noble breed splashing through the shallow waters of the marsh and beach and heading straight towards your camera, providing iconic prize-winning images.

This workshop includes the best of all our Camargue white horses shoots, in the marsh, in the woods, on the beach and in the sea. To top it off, we have added an indoor portraits shoots with different-coloured Lusitano stallions, using natural daylight; an indoor portraits shoot of a trained black Andalusian stallion and a beautiful white Camargue stallion, using lighting and natural daylight; and an outdoor shoot of the black Andalusian stallion on the beach.

The result is 9 horses shoots and an Equine and Wildlife photographer’s dream!

Day 1.

Arrive at Montpellier airport by mid-afternoon for transfer to your charming hotel in the centre of the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes. Take time to unwind, unpack and perhaps explore the narrow streets of the city that lie within the mile-long rampart walls.

At 6pm, we will gather for a welcome drink and briefing meeting.

Day2.

We head to a local ranch to photograph different horses, including a white Camargue stallion and a black Andalusian stallion. This is an indoor shoot, using both lighting and natural daylight, so you can capture intense portraits of these beautiful trained horses, against a ‘moody’ backdrop.

In the afternoon, we go to a Riding School to photograph some beautiful Portuguese Lusitano stallions. This is an indoor shoot, using natural daylight only, that pierces through the roof and lights up the horses. You will have the opportunity to photograph several horses of different colours.

Day 3.

We head to the beach for a shoot with the beautiful black Andalusian stallion. We photograph him running along the beach and dashing and diving in and around the sea and surf, making for a wide range of dramatic action shots.

Late afternoon, we photograph the Camargue wild white horses running through the marsh. We shoot several drives with the horses running across and towards your field of view. We will also take portraits of the ‘Gardians’ (Camargue Cowboys) dressed in their traditional Camargue attire, trident in hand, surrounded by the herd.

Day 4.

In the morning we have another session with the Camargue horses, running together through the shallow waters of the lakes and marsh. We also capture the horses, beautifully backlit, as they run through the woods. After the action, we take close-up portraits of the horses.

Late afternoon, we head back to the beach for the ultimate spectacle of the Camargue white horses running along the golden sand and in the sea. We then capture the horses in a peaceful lagoon with beautiful reflections as the sun sets.

Day 5.

In the morning, we head to the beach for a shoot with a beautiful white Camargue stallion. We photograph him running and rearing on the top of the sand dunes, making for striking action shots.

Late afternoon, we return to the beach to photograph the horses, first in the lagoon, then running along the golden sand and in the sea as the sun sets in the surf spray!

Day 6.

For the final shoot, we photograph the sparring stallions – this is a unique opportunity to see the Camargue white horses entwined at full height, in feisty temperament, with their manes flying.

Afternoon departures to Montpellier airport.

*To join our workshops, you need to have a good understanding of how your own camera works (how to set it up in Manual, Aperture and Shutter priority) and understand about exposure.

If you would like to arrive a day early to beneﬁt from a course on your camera, settings, techniques and how to obtain the best out of your workshop, please let us know. We consider the pre-course very worthwhile for intermediate-level photographers and essential for beginners or photographers with new equipment they are not familiar with.
