Wild White Horses & Saint Louis Festival
So many people across the globe fulfil their life-long dream with us to photograph the Wild White Horses of the Camargue.
You can’t beat the adrenalin rush of this noble breed splashing through the shallow waters of the marsh and lakes.
Action shots, sparring stallions, and gorgeous portraits, under Mediterranean blue skies, make for award-winning photography.
Exclusive shoots, in small groups, led by No.1 Camargue specialist, Serge Krouglikoff.
This workshop takes place during the annual mediaeval Festival of Saint Louis where Aigues-Mortes celebrates Louis IX, King of France and the town’s founder. In full Middle Ages attire you can capture street musicians, theatre, parades, medieval market & ball, etc.
This workshop appeals to Wildlife, Equine & Festival/Street photographers alike.
Day 1.
We will collect you from Montpellier airport for transfer to your charming hotel in the centre of the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes. Take time to unwind, unpack and perhaps explore the streets of the city that lies within the mile-long rampart walls.
At 18h00, we will gather for a welcome drink and briefing meeting.
Day2.
We spend the morning at the Ornithological park, which is a nature reserve of great importance. Accompanied by a BBC Wildlife bird specialist photographer and expert in his field, we will have pre-dawn access, long before it is opened to the public, enabling you to photograph the birds exclusively in the early morning light. You will be guided to the prime locations among the waterways and lakes to capture a wide variety of species, from single birds perched at the nest to large flocks of pink Flamingos.
In the afternoon, we photograph the Wild White horses running through the marsh and heading straight towards your camera. We shoot several drives with the horses running across your field of view. We will also take portraits of the ‘Gardians’ (Camargue Cowboys) dressed in their traditional Camargue shirts & hats, trident in hand, surrounded by the herd.
Day 3.
In the morning we have another session with the horses running together through the shallow waters of the lakes. After the action, we then take portraits of the horses on their own or in small groups.
After the shoot, you can browse the mediaeval market, within the city walls, and at 11h00 don’t miss the Historical Parade with King Louis, his court, the knights, flag throwers, musicians, soldiers and his people, providing great festival photography opportunities as they make their way to Porte de la Gardette for 11h30 where the King is presented with the keys to the City. There is plenty of mediaeval entertainment, throughout the day, where you can capture great street photography of the festival.
In the afternoon we photograph the white horses running through the marsh, in a different location. We will also capture the ‘Gardians’ at work, herding the wild horses.
After the shoot, you may want to capture the night Historical Parade, through the City, that starts at 9pm.
Day 4.
For the final shoot, we capture the sparring stallions– this is a unique opportunity to see the White horses entwined at full height, in feisty temperament with their manes flying!
After the shoot, you have another opportunity to capture the festivities in town, with the Historical Parade starting at 10h15 and the presentation of the keys at 10h45.
Early afternoon departures to the airport.
