Wild and refined emotions in Camargue by Denis Matton-Perry

Wild and refined emotions in Camargue by Denis Matton-Perry

When Le Rhône flows into the Mediterranean Sea, it splits into two arms which embrace areas of marshes, ponds and lagoons. This wetland of around 370 000 acres that Le Petit-Rhône and Le Grand-Rhône cannot clasp and which, on the contrary, seems to escape them forever, is known as La Camargue. This flat, semilake scope, where land and sea are intertwined, offers a symphony of primordial elements played by all kinds of minerals and plants. It has no equivalent in Europe except in Romania and Ukraine both penetrated by the majesty of the Danube Delta on the shores of the Black Sea.

La Camargue forms a triangle at the top of which sits the city of Arles, the largest municipality in France, with its Roman arena and theater, its ferias (1), its international festival of photography, its museum of ancient Arles , … A jewel of civilization at the gates of a raw nature unfolding its harsh beauty. To the south of the city extends the kingdom of wild horses, fierce bulls, pink flamingos whirling in the blue of the sky. Contemplating the spectacle of this wildlife in a world morning setting provides a rare aesthetic emotion, almost religious.

From this centuries-old  assembly of men, animals, sands, stones, reeds, alluvium, still and traveling waters, a culture and traditions marked by a strong identity were born. That of the gardians, protectors and guides of the manades (derived from the Provencal manado) that is to say of the herds. That of mas, in other words the traditional Camargue farms without fence, open to freedom. The culture of gardians and mas glorifies the life of hard work in contact with nature, the pride of belonging to a guild of hard-working men, happy to serve the community without counting their hours.

To illustrate my point, I turned to the remarkable photos of Serge Krouglikoff who kindly allowed me to present them to you. Serge is the founder of Create Away Photography Workshops which offer exciting and varied Camargue workshops, for photographers of all levels, throughout the globe, and has become the number 1 specialist in the region to photograph the iconic Wild White Horses. With exclusive access to private domain and wild horses, you are taken to the best locations, at the best times, to capture award-winning images.  Serge reached excellence in international fashion photography, and loves to communicate his passion and professional know-how developed over the course of his photographic career.
